SUMMARY:The Great Swing Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Join us for one of the most upbeat and fun events of the summer on the Northwood House Lawns… The Great Swing Picnic! \n \nIf you love a great night out\, gather some friends and dress yourselves up in style for this fun-filled frolic picnic event this July! We bring you a vintage-themed night of entertainment\, headlined by one of the best swing and dixieland jazz bands on the national circuit…the incredible Alvar TreeFrogs from London! \nThis professional six piece band recreate the energetic musical vibe of a vintage New Orleans street party from the 1920s and 30s which is sure to have you up and jiving with your friends until the cows come home! Covering classic dixie-style jazz and swing tracks from a golden age of incredible uptempo music\, this is a unique opportunity not to be missed! \n \nGetting the Swing Picnic off to a lively start\, you’ll be welcomed by our Swing Picnic DJs Ronnie Pakes & Ian Hobbs who’ll set the tone for what’s to come.  Then\, before we get to our Treefrogs\, the Island’s own vintage dance supremos\, the Gramophone Fun Band\, headed up by the legendary  JC Grimshaw and Paul Armfield\, will get you warmed up with their own unique style of vintage swing and gypsy jazz. \nWhat a treat for music lovers and those in search of a very sociable night out here at Northwood House\, one of the Island’s most popular event venues of the last few years. \n \nDressing up and making a real effort is kind of  the thing for the Swing Picnic…that’s what makes it Great! Just think Great Gatsby\, Prohibition\, Peaky Blinders\, Downton Abbey or anything from between the 1920’s -1940’s goes. Be a style icon for the night and just go for it\, you’ll be in great company! \n \n  \n \nObviously it’s a outdoor picnic event\, so bring what ever you need in the food department along with you\, but please leave the booze and other drinks at home. All tickets include at least 2 bar tokens per person and if you try to bring alcohol you’ll kindly be asked to leave at the door by our friendly team of door staff for collection on the way home. This is a licenced venue where alcohol has to be purchased from one of the lawn bars to be consumed at the event and is the only way we can make an event of this quality possible at these ticket prices. \nPlease also bring picnic blankets and chairs with you for your own comfort if you purchase a standard lawn ticket. \nYou can purchase one of a limited number of outdoor 4 person garden table tickets and 10 person group tickets with garden chairs and tables included if you don’t want the hassle of bringing your own. \nIf you don’t want to bring a picnic\, hot food will be available from our food partners “The Prickly Pear” who’ll have a full menu of great street food available through-out the evening from their cantina on the lawn. \n \nOther event information \nPlease bring a printed copy of your online email booking receipt with you as your ticket\, which will be checked off at our box office against the order database. \nThis is a great fun and very sociable outdoor event\, so please dress up in style\, but also for the weather. SUMMARY:Northwood House: Congealed Light (The Haunted History Tour with Author Tim Wander)
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us for a spooky evening featuring ghost stories\, myths\, legends and supernatural tales associated with the amazing Northwood House\, the Isle of Wight’s most haunted building. \nThis evening is a far more than just a retelling of old ghost stories – it’s a chance to unravel the history of the house and to understand why this huge Georgian manor is so haunted. It’s fascinating history includes wild parties\, royal scandal and an Egyptian funeral temple. \n For many years and two World Wars it was a Red Cross hospital\, complete with its own operating theatre and secret tunnels. It has also been a convent\, a WW2 command centre and even a morgue for Spanish flu victims hidden in its huge 300-year-old cellars. It is no wonder Northwood House has more than its fair share of spiritual residents. \nTim Wander was the major projects manager at Northwood House for six years and is now a Board member and Trustee of the Charity restoring this amazing mansion to past glories. In that time\, he has hosted numerous paranormal and ghost hunting groups for the Charity and taken part in two detailed University led studies. \nTim is also an engineer\, author\, writer and lecturer with a science background. He still remains open minded about everything considered “super-natural” and his talk will reveal some of the ghostly sightings and unexplained occurrences that continue to occur. “There are more things in heaven and earth\, Horatio\, than are dreamt of in your philosophy” \nSo does he believe in ghosts? Well first you have to understand what a ghost is\, or could be\, or even was…. So if you are fascinated by ghosts\, this is an evening not to miss. Did you know that Albert Einstein called Ghosts ‘congealed light’? and that he proved that “Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another.” \nTim Wander\, author of the popular book “The Ghosts of Northwood House” will be your host. Those of a nervous disposition should perhaps only attend the event if accompanied by another person! \n  \nTHE GHOSTS OF THE PAST WILL TALK TO ALL WHO LISTEN \n  \nCome with an open mind. Expect nothing\, but be prepared for everything. Tim will tell you how the paranormal pervades every corner of the house\, what the years of professional ghost hunters have seen and how science might offer… just some of the answers. \nLimited tickets. One night only (additional dates maybe added if demand dictates). \nTicket price: £22.50/person \nTickets include a medium sized glass of house wine or a 33cl bottle of premium beer or a hot drink and biscuits upon arrival. \nDoors open at 7pm for a 7.30pm start. \nSorry\, this event is for adults and teenage children only. Teenagers must be accompanied by their parent(s) or guardian(s). Wine and beer option available for over 18’s only. \nThis exclusive tour of the house is by candlelight and through darkened rooms\, so guests will need to take extra care while moving through the building. Those of a nervous disposition should only attend the event if accompanied by another person. \nNarrow stairs will be used to access the cellars and first floor of the building\, so some parts of the experience will not be suitable/accessible for those with walking difficulties or  needing a wheelchair for which we apologise in advance. \nFree parking is available in the rotunda car park\, with entrance through the main rotunda doors. \nSigned copies of Tim Wanders book “Ghosts of Northwood House” will be available to purchase on the night. \nEvent lasts approx 2- 2.5 hours. \nOther T&C’s: \n\nFull payment must be made at the time of booking. If a customer cancels their booking 7 days or more before the day of the event\, a full refund will be given.\nNo refund will be given for cancellations less than 7 days before the event\, even if the cancellation is Covid-related.\nThere are circumstances beyond our control\, such as failure of a third party to supply their services\, where we may have to cancel an event at short notice. In this event\, a full refund of the ticket price will be made to customers. Expenses such as travel and accommodation will not be refunded.\nNo persons under the age of 13 are permitted to attend the event. Teenage children must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian.\nNo recording of the tour and stories are permitted.

SUMMARY:The 2024 Northwood House Tennis Court Summer Supper (fundraiser)
DESCRIPTION:Everyone is invited to the Northwood House lawns on the evening of Sunday 7th July for great music\, a delicious summer buffet feast and some excellent company as we come together again for our annual fund-raising evening for the Aitken Tennis Courts in  Northwood Park.\nThe Aiken Courts are a popular community asset used by lots of local people. Our mission is to keep the courts as a “free to play” facility\, but as a charity\, we need help with the ongoing costs of maintaining the courts to a high playing standard. \nFollowing the total refurbishment of the courts that was completed in 2020\, the courts have become more popular than ever…so if you play regularly or just want to support the charity with its community-focused aims\, this is your chance to help contribute by coming along and enjoying this special evening. \nJust to clean the courts professionally each spring now costs over £1800 alone\, with ongoing fees like insurance and other maintenance adding up to many hundreds of pounds over the year. \n \nSo join us for a very sociable evening on the Northwood House lawns from 6:30pm to 10.30pm on Sunday 7th July\, with a glass of prosecco or G&T on arrival and a sumptuous summer buffet supper laid on by the  Northwood House volunteer catering team\, winners of the Queens Award For Volunteering and renowned for putting on a great spread of food for the best occasions! \nThe summer buffet will be served from 7.30pm\, so arrive nice and early in readiness. \nThe Lawn Bar itself will be closing early on the afternoon at 6pm  and will re-open at 6.30pm to host this strictly ticket-only exclusive event. \n \nGreat live music will accompany this delicious summer supper which will be brought to you this year by new local band “A Bit on the Side” who’ll be playing a wide range of rocking party cover songs from the 1970’s to the 2000’s\,  with dancing very much encouraged in front of the stage. The band will be supported by a special guest act…the George Michael Way (tribute) who’ll be singing exclusively ahead of the main band. \n \nThe Lawn Bar marquee will be there to use too\, so even if the weather is less than clement you can still enjoy the evening whilst under cover. \nWe will also be doing some fundraising on the evening with a tennis themed raffle and silent auction raffle hosted by G4’s Mike Christie\, with prize donations gratefully received in advance. \nTickets are only £22 each and include a fixed donation of £12 to the court Funds\, with the remainder going to cover food\, entertainment and sundry event costs. \nThis is a great opportunity to donate to the charity’s efforts to keep the courts in the best shape possible and free to play\, while having a great night out with friends. \n \nEveryone is welcome (you definitely dont have to play tennis to come along!)\, with tickets available to purchase online below or by phoning the office on 01983 293642 between 10am and 2pm Mon-Thurs. \nWhen booking tickets online please state for each one the persons buffet-eating preferences so we can cater appropriately: \nGeneral with meat/fish/veg options \nVegetarian only \nVegan only \nDo this by ticking the box in the drop down menu. \nIf you have other dietary requirement (allergies etc)\, please specify on the next drop down box and leave a contact number so we can call you back if required. \nThere is also the option to add an extra donation to assist with the funds in the ticket section below\, with all extra donations being gratefully received. \nYou are welcome to bring your tennis rackets along and have some fun on the adjacent courts during the evening as well. \nPlease note ticket online ticket sales close on Friday 5th July at 12pm in order for orders to be placed for catering.

SUMMARY:The 2024 Aitken Courts "Cowes Open" Fun Tennis Tournament
DESCRIPTION:Tennis players of Cowes and the wider Island community…its time to step up to the base line! \nAre you up for taking part in this year’s Cowes Annual Open Tennis Tournament which is taking place this June and early July? \nFollowing the success of last year’s tournament\, we’re expecting an even greater number of players to take part this year\, all helping to raise funds towards the upkeep of the Northwood Park Aitken Tennis Courts. The courts are widely recognised as some of the best public courts on the Isle of Wight after huge amounts of fundraising and investment in 2019 and 2020. By fundraising we hope to help keep them this way! \nThe Cowes Open will comprise of three separate tournaments\, all to be played on the Aitken Tennis Courts: \n\n1) Cowes Open Singles:  8th June to 6th July 2024\n2) Cowes Open Doubles:  8th June to 6th July 2024\n3) Cowes Open “Social” Doubles:  Sunday 7th July 2024\n\n  \nThe main Singles and Doubles tournaments will be played over the course of a four week period to give competitors a bit of time to complete their matches\, and the “Social” Doubles tournament will take place on Sunday 7th July\, the same day as the Annual Tennis Court Summer Supper on the lawns of Northwood House that evening. The supper event also raises further funds to assist Northwood House Charitable Trust cover court maintenance costs and help keep them free to play for the community at large. Trophies for the tournament winners will be presented at the supper. \nThe Cowes Open Fun Tennis Tournament is  a very informal competition of singles and doubles matches\, open to players of all ages and at all levels of ability. Matches should be completed as soon as possible in order for subsequent rounds of the tournament to be drawn and played by the end of Saturday  6th July. The Social doubles are played through the day on Sunday 7th July to round off the tournament. \nOf course\, the emphasis is on the word “fun” to try and engage with the heightened interest in tennis generally over the summer period. Entry fees from the tournament are all going to the Aitken Court maintenance fund\, to help Northwood House Charitable Trust with its ongoing commitment to keep the courts well looked after and free to play for the local community. \nMike Christie\, founder of the Wight Proms and regular tennis court user has stepped up once again to organise the tournament and will be the person who will be liaising with all entrants to plan the games\, collect the scores and manage draws for subsequent rounds of the competition. \nPlease enter by the closing date of Thursday 6th June\, for matches to be organised beginning on the 8th June. Mike will be in touch to circulate the draws ASAP\, allowing for time to schedule matches depending on the number of entries. \nHere are details of the three tournaments in greater depth: \n1) Cowes Open Singles: £10 entry fee \nAimed at more serious players of a reasonable perceived ability. \nRound-robin format where each player plays everyone in their group like in the Football World Cup. In the case of there being only being two groups\, the winner of each group shall play in a finals match. In the case of there being four groups\, then the winners of each group go to a semi-final from which point it’s a knock-out to the final match. \nEach match will be best of 3 sets with the result being either win or lose\, and the number of games won and lost included in the group scoring. Standard tennis scoring: 15/30/40/Deuce/Advantage. The match is self-umpired and self scored in the spirit of a fun competition. \n2) Cowes Open Doubles £20 entry fee per doubles team\, with partners remaining together for the whole tournament. You can also enter as a single player and be partnered at random with another single player (£10 entry fee per person). \nAimed at more serious players of a reasonable perceived ability. \nRound-robin format where each team plays every team in their group\, like in the Football World Cup. In the case of there being only being two groups\, the winning doubles pairing of each group shall play in a finals match. In the case of there being four groups\, then the winners doubles pairing of each group go to a semi-final from which point it’s a knock-out to the final match. \nEach match will be best of 3 sets with the result being either win or lose\, and the number of games won and lost included in the group scoring. Standard tennis scoring: 15/30/40/Deuce/Advantage. You can also enter as a single player and be partnered at random with another single player (£10 entry fee per person). \nPerhaps the most fun element of the competition\, where players of all ages and abilities are encouraged to enter with a partner (or we’ll team you up with someone on the day)\, this will take place on the day of the Hog Roast Fundraiser and will be done within one session. \nIf a match can’t be completed due to the opponent(s) withdrawing before or during the match\, it will be counted as a straight sets win for remaining player(s). \nPlayers can enter all three parts of the competition if they wish\, but must pay the fee to enter each one. \nSorry\, over 18’s only may enter this year due to safeguarding regulations on the courts. \nBy entering\, players agree to: \n\nTake part at their own risk and vouch for their own fitness to be able to compete.\nArrange a convenient time to play their scheduled match directly with their opponent via phone or email.\nPlay their matches in the spirit of a fun competition and conduct themselves accordingly.\nReport the match scores back to the organiser on the same day if possible.\nHaving the tournament match draws and the results publicised on the “Tennis in the Park” facebook page so all entrants can remain informed on how the competition is progressing.\n\nEnter below now or for more information please email Mike Christie on: contact@mikechristie.co.uk \nTo book tickets for the Annual Tennis Court Summer Supper\, please click here!
