Restoration project set to start with help from the Coastal Revival Fund

A major renovation project will soon start at historic Northwood House in Cowes. Financed mainly by a £50,000 grant from the Department for Communities and Local Government through their Coastal Revival Fund and administered by the Isle of Wight Council, the money will enable the full restoration and preservation of the iconic rotunda entrance building.

Roseleen Cullen, Chair of Northwood House Charitable Trust Co Ltd, said, “This project is an important part of the ongoing work by the Charity to ensure that the House and the Park remain assets for the people of Cowes.  Northwood House’s rich and diverse history and Grade ll* listing make the preservation and protection of the property an ever increasing challenge, but this award significantly helps us preserve it for the future.”

Work will involve significant roof repairs to prevent serious water ingress, much needed ventilation improvement and the detailed restoration and decoration of the columns, dome and surrounding façade. The project will include cleaning and refinishing the historic stone floor, repairing the damage and wear caused by the passage of nearly 200 years and many thousands of visitors and guests attending celebrations in the House.

Tim Wander, the Charity’s Project Manager noted, “The project would finally address long-standing and serious issues of water ingress that is causing structural damage within the main entrance to the House. This essential work will preserve and protect this unique part of the House through which all visitors, staff and tenants pass every day and will continue to improve the fantastic interior in line with the objectives of the Charity.

“The project will restore to its original splendour a key part of the building and public area is widely used. The House has watched over and supported the town and people of Cowes for over 200 years and this work will ensure it can continue to do so long into the future.”

The work will also include continuation of the award winning restoration program within the main House that was part funded by the Coastal Revival Fund in 2016. Once completed, the work will bring about a significant structural and aesthetic upgrade to what is an important part of the historic building’s offering as a leading venue for events and functions.

The Coastal Revival Fund grant is administered through the Isle of Wight Council and the Charity has liaised closely with the Council’s Planning and Housing Services team and thank them for their support.
